Shishya - Nikita Rao

Nikita Rao, now 11 years old, started learning Bharathanatya from Guru Smt. Yamuna Srinidhi at the age of 6. As a student of Nrityasiri Center for Performing Arts, she has performed at numerous events in Houston, including events organized by Kannada Vrinda, Meenakshi Temple Society, and Miller Outdoor Theater. She also performed in the fundraising events for Hare Krishna Temple and AIM for Seva.
Apart from dance, Nikita is learning classical Indian music (Carnatic vocal) and has performed at various Indian cultural and religious events. She is also learning western violin and has performed in concerts organized by Greater Houston Youth Orchestra. She is part of the Symphony at Westbrook Intermediate School where she is attending 6th grade.
Nikita has received various academic accolades as well. This past year in the 5th grade, she was North Pointe Elementary School’s Spelling Bee Champion and received 2nd place in the Science Fair. Additionally, her artwork was displayed at Clear Creek ISD’s Imagination Celebration. She was also selected into Duke University’s Talent Identification Program. Nikita is in the gifted and talented program and received the President’s award for outstanding academic achievement.
Despite being born and raised in the United States, Nikita maintains a strong connection to her heritage and culture. She can read, write, and speak her mother tongue, Kannada. She looks forward to her Rangapravesha as a unique opportunity to combine her passion for dance, music, and the Kannada language to portray the various aspects of our ancient Hindu culture. She would like to offer her humble namana to God, parents, Guru, teachers, and all the elders on this occasion and seek their blessings.
